Stars share new single "Capelton Hill" + expand tour dates
Stars today released their gently billowing, bittersweet new single “Capelton Hill,” the heart of the Montreal band’s first new album in five years, From Capelton Hill, out May 27th.
The track arrives alongside a full band live performance video recently filmed in Montreal’s Zoomer studio and directed by Darren Curtis. “This song sounds like an ending. And maybe it is,” explains vocalist Torquil Cambell. “It's certainly a moment of looking back; at what we've done together, and what we've lost along the way. It focuses on this band’s enduring obsession: loss. The cost of loving somewhere or someone is the fact that you lose them. The last two years have taught us all a lot about loss; loss of loved ones, of time, of memories, of simple pleasures. That loss hurts. We're all hurt, and there is no way around it, you can only go through it. Whether you're ten or fifty, things change. But on Capelton Hill, maybe things can stay the same. For just one more year.”
Stars today also announced a headlining fall U.S. tour that begins with a show at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall, and sees the band playing throughout the midwest and southwest. Additional European dates throughout 2023 have also been announced and tickets for all new shows go on-sale this Friday, April 29th 10:00am local time. Before then, the band will embark on a summer headlining West Coast tour kicking off in Vancouver, Canada on June 4th that includes two June shows at LA's The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. “Capelton Hill,” the album’s final pre-release single, follows four other tracks from the new LP: “Build A Fire,” Patterns,” “Pretenders,” “Snowy Owl” released to great press from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Exclaim!, Under The Radar, and more.

Musically, From Capelton Hill feels like walking into Stars’ familiar teenage bedroom. Campbell says it cuts to the band’s founding principles: it is brimming with gothic, dazzling ‘80s and ‘90s Britpop arrangements, but rendered with intimacy and warmth rather than with cold, digital remove. A wealth of horn and string arrangements unfold across the record in true Stars fashion, dreamy and macabre. More than ever, From Capelton Hill feels like a direct channeling of Stars’ decades-long pursuit. “What I love about the album,” Amy Millan reflects, “is that we’re chasing the truth of the matter rather than chasing a hook. We’re just telling the truth.”
